Class Descriptions

All Traditional Dance Classes...
We divide our classes by age and if they have had immediate prior experience in that style of dance.  Classes meet once a week for either 30 minutes or 45 minutes depending on the student's age.  Ages 3-5, no matter their prior experience, are 30 minute classes; any age over is a 45 minute class.  They will learn proper technique terminology, or terminology appropriate for their age, and  proper execution of technique.  Your student will also be challenged to improve themselves in their dance skill in a fun and encouraging environment.

All of our classes will perform in the annual recital which is held on the first Sunday of June.  Their recital costume will be measured for in the fall and tried on as they arrive.  No costume will leave the studio until may given that 100% of their tuition is paid.

There is a weekly dress code we try to enforce.  They will be described in the later part of each class description and also on the schedule page.
Classes

Creative Movement
(age 3 by September 24, 2011)

Creative Movement is a class for aspiring dancers! Or 3 year olds with energy to be used up.  This class is 30 minutes in length and depending on the size of the class there will be a teacher and an assistant teacher in the room.  In this class your student will learn basic dance and movement skills with adapted terminology that they can understand.  They will also learn spatial and bodily awareness, musical recognition, and give them a chance to work on social skills. This is all accomplished through multiple creative activities that maintain your student's attention span.
Ballet
We look at ballet as a foundational building block in dance. The technique learned in it carries over to every other style of dance that we teach. It develops many elegant qualities in an individual such as grace, poise, carriage, and balance. It will also improve your student's strength in their feet, arms, and core muscles over time.

Each level of ballet will stress importance of the execution of technique learned. As well as builds upon the class prior to it, (ie. Continuing Ballet 5-6 builds upon Pre Ballet). It is always a good idea, but not necessary, to continue with ballet as you participate in other dance styles.

Tap
Tap is a style of dance that is perfect for the student who loves music and sounds! Be warned parents that your student will want to take their shoes onto hardwoodd or tile floors.

In this class students will primarily learn coordination of their lower body... their feet. How to combine different combinations of toes, heels, and toe tip sounds to get different steps. Also musical timing, speed, rhythms, and how they all work together are other things your student will be learning during a tap class.

Each class builds off of the other. Speeds become faster. Rhythms and sound combinations become more complicated. And the added challenge of making those rhythms in sync with their classmates become more important as a student progresses through Tap.
Jazz
Jazz is an energetic and faster paced dance style. It uses some of the ballet terminology but also fusses theatrical, pop, and street forms together.

The class will focus on strength in the lower body and core for turns, jumps, and "tricks". Another major element that will be developed is flexibility and articulation of joints and body parts.

Hip - Hop

Students must be 6 years of age to begin taking Hip Hop Classes.

Hip Hop is structured street or pop style dance. It is up beat and fast paced movements. The class focuses on isolation of body parts as well as the timing and coordination of music and movements. This class requires a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Occasionally students are taught or experiments with "tricks".

Modern
Modern is a new dance style we are offering to students ages 6 and over.

Unlike ballet, modern dance has no fixed terminology of it's own. It does however incorporate the terminology of ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and other dance forms in order to describe the movements used. Modern Choreographers have created technique but students can also work on creating movements of their own.

We will explore movement concepts and elements; such as weight, spacing, relationships, and energy, which can be applied to other dance styles. Students will also learn to understand their body; how it moves, where it is in space, when it says it is time to stop, and much more.
