Dancing Education
(Homeschool classes)

Dance classes with a purpose.  These lessons are dance lessons that also incorporate traditional school subjects.  The lessons are a supplement to the subjects being taught to students on a regular basis; it is not a curriculum in itself.  It is an hour long class for grades K-12.

Classes are planned and presented using brain-compatible principles that make learning fun and enjoyable for all types of students. Using a five-part lesson plan, students explore a variety of dance concepts throughout the semester by warming up with the BrainDance, exploring the concept, developing skills, creating, and cooling down. The five-part lesson plan alternates teacher-directed activities with student-centered activities, and developing skills with improvisation. This structure provides the repetition and novelty that engages all learners.

Developed by Anne Green Gilbert, the BrainDance is a series of exercises that really warms up your body and your brain for learning. It is comprised of eight fundamental movement patterns that we move through in the first year of life. Research has shown that these patterns are crucial to the wiring of our central nervous system. The benefits for students cycling through these patterns each week include reorganization of the neurological system, increased blood and oxygen flow to the respiratory system and brain, and enhanced body strength and alignment.
Parents you can help us structure the class to best fit into your curriculum.  The following class topics are merely ideas of what can be taught through these Dancing Education classes. Tell us what they are learning so we can supplement it.  We can cover a broad range (ie. continents of the world) of a subject or narrow it down to a single topic of study (ie, France).  Want us to assign homework or projects then let us know.    Classes are set up on a once weekly basis for each month (4 lessons).  However other options can be arranged such as you want to spend more time in a single subject then give us a heads up.  These classes have so much freedom as long there is a clear communication between all of us.

You can also call and arrange the details for a teacher to attend your Homeschool group.

Topics can include…
Time to Move!
 – Each semester will begin studies with Time to Move! Students will become familiar with the class format, other students, and themselves.  This class covers basic movement concepts such as special awareness, kinetic awareness, and a variety of movement skills. They will also learn about their bones, and muscles through dancing.

D-A-N-C-E
– In this class students will learn spelling, writing, and vocabulary through dance by using their bodies to create letters individually and as a group.   We will work with poetry, short stories, and other literary compositions throughout the dance class.  Students will create various dances that reflect those literary topics from basic word composition to the structure of a cinquain poem, as well as various other details.

Dancing In Time
– Students will learn dances from different historical time periods.  The court dances of the Renaissance, social mixers from the American Revolution, the Charleston from the roaring 20’s, and ballroom dancing which was introduced throughout the 19th and 20th centuries are just some that can be covered.    Also covered will be bits and pieces about the social etiquette, fashion, and major events of those time periods.

Dance Around the World
 – This class will teach students dances from around the world.  All continents can be covered in once class or we could choose to study only one continent.  Students will also learn about the history, traditional clothing, and purpose of those dances, as well as other cultural background.

Moving Science Forward
– Dance is fun and science can be dull but, Dance and Science can be learned together! Whether it is about geology, biology, kinetic motion, or any other area of science we can learn about it through dance.  Some students do not pay any attention to dull studies unless they are moving and can associate that study to a motion.  Here is a perfect opportunity for it to really sink in.
